England 0-0 Ghana: A Glorious Achievement in Achieving Nothing

Forty thousand supporters witnessed an event of historical footballing emptiness at Gillette Stadium, and the algorithm nearly predicted it.

England versus Ghana, Group L, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Gillette Stadium, Massachusetts. The referee blew his whistle. Players moved around a pitch. At no point did the ball enter either net. The referee blew his whistle again. This, according to all available evidence, constitutes the entirety of what occurred. Final score: England nil, Ghana nil. Nil. From the Latin nihil, meaning "nothing," which is also the amount of goals scored, the amount of England victories recorded, and — pursuant to Regulation 47(b) of the Department of Footballing Outcomes — the value assigned to this result by the Ministry of Points Accrual, filed under "a point each, I suppose."

The Stock Liga algorithm, a 40-factor model that treats each match as a price discovery event, arrived at Gillette Stadium with considerable confidence. England were priced at 1.32 to win — a near-certainty in the language of odds, the footballing equivalent of filing paperwork that simply reads "obviously." The algorithm also determined, with what can only be described as absolute certainty, that more than one goal would be scored (1.03 odds, barely worth the electricity to calculate), and that more than one-and-a-half goals would be scored (1.19 odds, filed in triplicate). The algorithm was, to use the technical term, completely wrong about all of that. However — and this is critical, this must be noted, a note is being passed to us RIGHT NOW confirming it — the algorithm correctly identified that both teams would not score. BTTS No at 1.59 landed. One from four. The algorithm correctly identified the match would contain no mutual goalscoring while simultaneously insisting it would contain goals. The Ministry of Silly Predictions has opened an inquiry.

— EDITOR'S NOTE: The preceding paragraph has been flagged as "too statistically honest" and will be toned down. The algorithm had a strong match. — SECOND EDITOR'S NOTE: It did not. The first editor has been sacked. The algorithm went one from four. — THIRD EDITOR'S NOTE: There is no third editor. This is a cry for help. —

What does a point mean for England in Group L? Their Survival Index — Stock Liga's read on tournament progression probability — absorbs this result like a damp sponge absorbs more dampness. They are not out. They are not, precisely, in. They exist in a bureaucratic purgatory of one point, a passport stamped "insufficient" by the customs official of group stage arithmetic. Ghana, meanwhile, have earned a point they were not, according to the algorithm, supposed to have. Their Survival Index has presumably increased. By how much? By the amount corresponding to "actually not losing," which is, historically, more than zero. The Department of Surprising Developments is processing their application. Three to five working days.

Their three chief weapons were: organisation, defensive structure, and — NOBODY EXPECTED — a fanatical devotion to not scoring. FOUR. Their FOUR chief weapons were organisation, defensive structure, a fanatical devotion to not scoring, and a point on the board. What England do with this point depends enormously on what happens next in Group L. What Ghana do with this point is, frankly, rather more interesting. A nil-nil at a World Cup against a nation ranked considerably above you is not nothing. It is, in fact, the precise opposite of nothing. It is a point. One single, beautiful, algorithmically-unpredicted point.

And now for something completely different. England nil, Ghana nil. Full time at Gillette Stadium. The algorithm called one from four, landing only on BTTS No, which is to say it correctly predicted the absence of a thing rather than the presence of anything. Stock Liga's Survival Index continues to update. Group L continues. Somewhere, the Ministry of Footballing Silly Decisions is reviewing ninety minutes of footage to determine whether the entire match constitutes a VAR incident requiring retrospective goals. It does not. The score remains nil-nil. The parrot is resting.
